My kids love a simple bottle of bubbles and can come up with all sorts of ways to play with them. For example, my older daughter will blow the bubbles and then my younger daughter will count how many she pops. Then, they will switch positions to see who can pop the most bubbles.
You don’t even have to play games with the bubbles as simply just blowing the bubbles and running around after them is enough to keep most kids busy for quite some time.
You can find bubbles at your dollar store or local discount store for pretty cheap especially during the spring and early summer months. You can also buy them online in bulk amounts to save money as well (it may cost you more than $10 but each bottle of bubbles ends up being cheaper).
There are some bubbles that come with different or unique wands or special bubble blowers but they are definitely not needed.
You can find a good quality Frisbee or sports disc for under $10 that won’t break the first time you try to play catch with your child. These are the discs that are used to play Ultimate Frisbee but are still good for kids in the backyard.
If you have a younger kid, simply tossing the Frisbee back and forth may be a good start or simply showing him how to properly throw a Frisbee. You can even make up challenge games to see if he can toss the disc into a certain area such as inside a hula hoop or on a certain block on your driveway.
For an older child, you can see if they are interested in playing Ultimate Frisbee or trying to attempt some cool tricks with the disc.
If you want to go even cheaper, you can usually find Frisbee’s at your local discount store for a few dollars but often times these discs don’t last very long.
You give your child a regular old playground ball and the possibilities are really endless. You may be familiar with these types of balls from when you were in school years ago.
There are all kinds of games you can play with these balls from kickball to a simple game of bounce with a younger child.
If you have more than one child you will be amazed at what type of games they come up with to play with the ball. It could be a simple game of catch or bounce or it could be hitting a target to see who knocks it over first.
There are a lot of different types of fun balls that you can buy for your child, but you can never pass up a basic red playground ball.
You can usually pick up one these balls on sale for around $5-$6.
Although sidewalk chalk is not really a “toy” it can lead to a lot of fun outdoors.
You can encourage your child’s creative side and have them draw you some fun pictures or make up a game of hopscotch with the chalk to encourage physical activity as well.
With younger kids and toddlers you can even turn sidewalk chalk into a fun learning experience with colors. You can have them name the color of the chalk and then have them draw something that is that color. This could even be done with preschoolers and kindergarten age children as well.
There are also some cool new sidewalk chalk options such as glitter or tie-dye that really impresses kids.
I really do recommend that parents with younger kids have some sidewalk chalk to play with at all times.
A water gun is a great inexpensive outdoor toy for the summer time. You can find some really cheap squirt guns that won’t last you very long or you can spend a bit more $anywhere from $6-$10) for a nicer Super Soaker gun.
There are a bunch of great games that you can play with water guns from a simple water gun fight to target practice. Check out my extensive list of games to play with water guns to find all sorts of fun activities and games that kids of all ages can play.
Water guns usually work best when the parent is willing to play or if you have more than one child that may be willing to play together with the water guns. But, there are some cool activities that are still fun for one child to play as well.
This is a fun ball game that you can play with your child that helps develop eye-hand coordination.
The set comes with two throwing scoops along with the ball that fits perfectly in the scoop area. The cool thing about this set is that you can play with your child, two children can play together or your child can even toss the ball up in the air and see if they can catch it.
It’s super inexpensive and it’s a nice outdoor toy option to have on hand if your child has a friend over or if they just get bored of playing with other items.
It even works great for taking to the beach or park as well.
This may seem like an odd choice at first, but if you use your imagination and creativity you can come up with a variety of different ways to make this set of cones fun for a child.
One example could be setting up an obstacle course in the backyard using these cones. Another one could involve setting up an obstacle course in the driveway for your child’s bike or scooter.
You can do more than just obstacle courses as well. You can use them for other games or races, as well as for digging in the dirt or sand, and even something like bowling to see how many cones you can knock over by rolling a ball.
You can even use the cones indoors to play games when the weather is not cooperating as well.
Some cone sets will cost slightly more than $10 but the one seen here is currently on sale (price may change) for right around $10.
The other nice thing about this particular set is that they are different colors so you can use them with toddlers and preschoolers to help teach them colors. Something like run to the blue cone could be a fun game that also involves learning.
Even if you don’t have a huge garden in your yard, a kid size gardening set can still be a great option for keeping your child busy outdoors.
Children can help out around the yard planting flowers or pulling weeds or you can even get a couple of seeds and help them plant an easy-to-grow vegetable in their very own spot in the garden.
This gardening set can even be used for more than just gardening. It’s a nice set for simply digging in the dirt. Give your child a small shovel and some dirt and they will stay busy for hours.
This particular set is recommended for ages 5 years and up just because they are real metal tools but if you keep a careful watch over your child it could be used for younger kids as well. Another option would be to check out some of the plastic gardening tool sets if you are worried your child is not old enough for these.
Your kid can catch all kinds of different things from butterflies and moths to even frogs with this net.
Your child will stay active as they run or walk around catching things as they also help to improve their eye hand coordination and learn about new bugs and animals.
This net from Melissa & Doug is recommended for ages 3 to 8 years old, as it is made specifically for kids. It can be bought for a nice price of well under $10 as well.
This would be great for the warmer months or even if you live in a climate where it stays warm pretty much all year long. Some people have even said they used the net when fishing with their child at a pond as well.
You could even get creative and buy a few small practice golf balls that are plastic and make up a catching game with the net as well.
A fun inexpensive outdoor toy that can be used by kids of all ages includes this mini sports ball set from Nerf.
It comes with 3 soft, foam balls including a football, soccer ball, and basketball. These are min size ones as they only measure about 5 inches in diameter but can be used for all sorts of fun games.
Even older kids will like the mini balls because they can be something different to play with rather than a full size, hard football. This also works out well if you have an older child and a younger one that want to play together.
You can come up with all sorts of fun games besides playing catch from tossing the balls in a basket or box to a relay race using the balls.
You can even use the balls indoors as the basketball can be paired with a mini basketball hoop as well.
This particular set does sell for right around $10 or less.
As you can see you don’t need to spend tons of money to get your child outside having fun. Although having an expensive playhouse or a new bike can be nice for a kid, there are plenty of inexpensive outdoors toys that make great gifts as well.
