I can remember the days of my childhood playing outside from morning until the sun set and usually even after that. I remember things like swimming, riding my bike, playing baseball and basketball, taking walks, playing tag, rollerblading, and so many more fun activities. There were so many days that I didn’t want to come inside and would whine about having to come in for dinner or to go to bed at night.
Nowadays, it is a rare sight that I see the kids in my neighborhood spending their days outside. In fact, the only time I see the older kids outside is when they are walking to and from each other’s houses. They rather spend their time indoors in front of the video games and computer or texting on their phone. And they are missing so many fun things to do outdoors and they may just regret when they are older and stuck inside all day long at a job.
When I became a mom 8 years ago, I vowed to teach my kids all the fun stuff I did outdoors as a kid and not have them stuck in the house all day long. I now have 4 kids and enjoy teaching them all the games, sports, and other fun activities that we can do outdoors. I don’t let them stay inside on nice days and even on the not so nice days. They love being able to go outdoors and get their energy out.
Kids need to be outside and need to be active. With the childhood obesity rates as high as they are, too many kids are sitting around indoors instead of getting outside and being active. Unless your child has some sort of medical condition that prevents them from any kind of outdoor time, you should be encouraging your child from a young age to get outside, get active and have some fun.
There are so many activities that kids can choose from and there are plenty of free or very inexpensive activities as well. For example, it doesn’t take any money to make up a scavenger hunt for your child and go walking around your neighborhood to find the items on the list.
I started Outdoor Fun Kids to help parents get ideas on how to get their children outside and having fun, no matter if they are a year old or 16 years old. Look around the site for some great ideas on games, toys, water fun, camping, and so much more to get your kids outdoors and having fun.
