You don’t have to have a pool in your backyard to have a ton of water fun with your kids. There are lots of great backyard water games and activities for kids that require no sort of pool at all.
If you want to get creative with cooling off this summer, why not try some of these games for kids that will have them getting wet and having fun. The games below can be fun for all ages and may even get your older kids out of the house and enjoying the summer sun.
With some of the water games you may need a hose with a sprinkler or you may just need a place to fill up a large bucket or so of water.
See how low your kids can go with a fun game of water limbo. All you need for this game is a hose and some room to play.
Turn the hose on full blast and start out holding the hose up higher seeing who can limbo underneath the spray of the water. Keep lowering the hose to see how low the kids can go without getting soaked in spray.
You will need a few different sized buckets for this game depending on how many kids are playing. Set up an obstacle course or just some sort of path where you have to start out filling a smaller bucket with water and then dumping into a larger bucket of water at the end of the course.
See who can fill up the large bucket first. Kids will love the fact that most of the water will end up splashing out of the bucket but will also love racing to see who can get the most water.
With younger kids you can keep it simple with just a straight line to the other bucket but for older kids make it more difficult with different obstacles from jumping over a hula hoop to having to go around cones.
Water Balloon Toss
The classic water balloon toss game is always a favorite with kids of all ages. You can find water balloons for pretty cheap especially at dollar stores so it shouldn’t cost you a whole lot of money.
You can play along with your child to see how far you can toss it without breaking or if you have more than one child, have them see how far they can toss the balloon before someone drops it or breaks it.
After water balloon toss you can also go for a water balloon fight if you want as older kids tend to really enjoy this as well.
This game is just like hot potato but you use a water balloon instead. Line everyone up in a circle and pass around the water balloon until someone drops it or breaks it.
Whoever the water balloon breaks on is then out of the game and the others continue playing until there is a winner.
If you have several players you can even add in a second water balloon to make things even more interesting.
Be sure to check out the other fun games to play with water balloons.
Squirt Gun Freeze Tag
If you have some squirt guns laying around the house you can play this fun game of squirt gun freeze tag. The concept is the same as regular freeze tag but instead of tagging the person you have to shoot them with a squirt gun.
You can pick an “it” person who has the water gun and then they chase around the others trying to squirt them with water. If the player gets hit with the water they freeze in place until another player can tag them. Be sure to switch up who is “it” or you can change when all the other players are frozen.
For this water game you will need a large bucket for each child and at least one large sponge (like one that you would use to wash a car). Fill up each kid’s bucket with water and have them stand across from another kid with the buckets right in front of each of them.
Wet the sponge and see who can toss the sponge into eachother’s buckets. When the sponge makes it into the bucket the kid behind it will get a big splash of water on them.
For younger kids you may only want them about 6 feet apart but for older kids you can have then stand around 8-10 feet apart to make it a little harder to get the sponge in the bucket.
There really are all sorts of fun water games that don’t require a pool in your backyard. Most are pretty cheap and so much fun for kids of all ages as well as for parents.
