When you want to have fun and beat the heat, but you don’t have a pool to jump into, water guns can be a great solution. I know that my kids simply love water guns of any kind, from the great big super soakers to the little hand water guns.
It can definitely be a lot of fun to simply run around with the water guns and shoot water at each other, but there are also some fun games to play with water guns. Next time you break out the water guns for your kids, why not teach them one of these games to play.
Beach Ball Races
Each child will need a water gun (preferably a powerful gun of the the same type) as well as an inflatable ball like a beach ball.
Have kids start at a starting line with their beach ball right in front of them. The players need to move their ball using only their water gun until they reach the finish line. The first person who’s beach ball crosses the finish line wins the game.
Water Gun Freeze Tag
This is a fun variation on freeze tag except that you use a water gun instead of simply tagging the player.
Pick one player to be “it” and that person gets armed with a water gun. The “it” player shoots the water gun at the other players and whoever gets hit by the water, is now frozen in place. That person can only become unfrozen if another player tags them. If “it” gets all the other players frozen, someone else is chosen as “it.”
Water Gun Target Game
This is a fun game that can be played all kinds of different ways depending on how wet the kids want to get.
Choose a target for your water guns to shoot at. It can be something like the inside of a hula hoop or a certain spot on the garage, or if you don’t mind getting wet, you can even make a person the target. The other players then take turns seeing who can hit the target with the water first standing back at the start line. For older kids you can always make it more difficult and have the target farther away while younger kids you may want the target up close.
Water Gun Soccer
For this game you will need an inflatable beach ball as well as water guns for the two players.
In this game, you can pair up the kids with one other player so that there is only one player vs. one player. This games works well if you only have two kids to begin with or if you are just playing with your kid in the backyard. Put the beach ball in the middle of the two players and then when you yell “Start” each player must only use their water gun to move the ball into the other person’ goal or over a certain line.
All Out Water Gun Fight
Of course you can’t forget the traditional all out water gun fight. Each kid is armed with a water gun and they simply shoot away.
I do have to say that this type of water gun activity usually does get kids running quite a bit. They have fun chasing after each other and they get some exercise, cool off and have fun all at the same time. You may want to set some ground rules though such as no shooting people in the face and no shooting people who don’t want to be shot.
If you are looking for a great water gun for your kids, there really are tons of them to choose from. There are the huge super soakers that may cost you quite a bit of money and then there are small little water gun pistols you can buy from the dollar store.
My recommendation for a great water gun is the Nerf Super Soaker Shotwave Blast. My son loves this gun and it worked well for us last summer and it still works this year as well. The gun shoots quite far, approximately 25 feet and is easy enough that younger kids can use it. It even has quick refill clips that you can use so that you don’t have to fill up all the time. Plus, we tend to like pump guns better than the regular aim and shoot ones as well.
