Make your trip to the beach with your young child a lot more fun by keeping them busy with some great beach games and activities.
Digging in the sand and splashing in the waves can be a lot of fun for kids, but you can make their beach trip even more exciting when you plan a few fun games for them as well.
Here are some super fun beach games geared towards toddler and preschool aged children.
Toss the Shells
Draw 3-5 circles in the sand and label each one with a different number. Then collect a bunch of seashells or rocks that your child can toss in the middle of the circles.
The amount of points you get is determined by the number in the circle. You only get points if the shell lands inside the circle.
See who can reach 10 points first or for older kids you can choose a higher number like 20 or 30 points.
Just be sure to draw your circles away from the waves.
Fly a Kite
The beach is a great place to learn how to fly a kite, especially if you are at a beach that isn’t very crowded.
Your beach trip can be a great way to teach your child how to fly a kit. It gives you plenty of room to get the kite up in the sky and can be fun watching the kite fly above the water. And best of all there is usually a breeze that allows your kite to get pretty high in the sky.
Be sure to check out all the cool kites you can buy for your toddler to take to the beach.
Build a Sandcastle
You can’t go to the beach with your child and not build a sandcastle. You can toss some good sand toys into your family beach bag and allow your little one to use their imagination when building the perfect castle.
And of course you don’t have to build an actual castle. You can build all kinds of different things from a sea monster to a pirate ship.
Playing in the sand is a lot more fun when parents join in as well. Work with your child to help them build something they can really be proud of so they will remember how much fun the beach was.
Water Balloon Toss
You don’t have to play in the ocean to have some fun with water at the beach. Bring along a basket full of water balloons and let the kids have a water balloon toss.
A nice game to go with the toss is to have pairs of people tossing the balloons and see who can last the longest without their balloon breaking. For even more of a challenge have each person take a small step backwards after each catch.
Parents can join right in on the fun with the water balloon toss as well.
Bring along a ball that is a good size for your toddler or preschooler and simply play catch on the beach. This can be a large beach ball or other inflatable ball or a softer rubber ball. You can even use a soft football for catch on the beach as well.
You can make up your own little games with playing catch such as you have to stand on one foot to catch the ball. This makes a game of catch a little more interesting.
If you have more than one young child you can bring along a ball for each or have them play ball together.
If you want to try something new and don’t mind spending a little bit of money on a new toy for your kids at the beach, check out the Melissa & Doug Sunny Patch Clicker Crab Toss and Grip set.
The set comes with two adorable crab mitts that are self stick to the balls that comes with them. Kids can play catch with each other and learn eye-hand coordination and not have to worry about dropping every ball that is thrown to them. It’s great for ages 2 years and up.
Beach Art Creations
You can make this into a game or competition or simply work together to collect a bunch of great beach items to make some art creations.
You can collect everything from shells, rocks, driftwood, and anything else you can find. Put all the pieces together and see what type of pictures you can create with all the items.
Some ideas for what to create include fish, rainbow, a person, and other ocean animals.
You can even make this into a scavenger hunt like game for older kids as well.
The beach can be so much for a toddler or preschooler. They are at that perfect age where they are super inquisitive and want to experience a bunch of new things and the beach is the perfect place to have fun and experience those new things.
